Date Of Birth: November 21, 1922
Date Of Death: August 10, 2013

Marion Louise Payne, 90, of Indianapolis, died on August 10, 2013. She was born November 21, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio to Lillian and Michael Schowerth. She graduated from Glenville High School, Cleveland, in 1941, a National Honor Society member. Conditions required her to find secretarial employment rather than attending college, regretfully. Then marriage, the birth of Kenneth (Swanson) and an amiable divorce again called for her to seek employment. She quickly became executive secretary for management at the General Electric Lamp Division of Cleveland. There she met and married Thomas Payne, a publication editor in the Division’s Advertising Department in 1951. A promotion for her husband in 1954 sent the family of three to Detroit, where again, with her restless energy, she became the executive secretary for the Director of Nursing at the nationally known Henry Ford Hospital. Still again, 1956 a management opportunity for Tom moved them to Chicago and the charming village of Glen Ellyn where Marion became President of the Newcomers Club, and Ken set state records in distance running at an excellent high school. In 1963, an invitation from a fellow Wabash graduate and fraternity brother brought the family to Indianapolis. With her fresh and friendly manner, Marion made many friends and joined several groups: Latreian and St. Margaret’s Guild, where she was Chairman of the 1974 Decorator’s Show House, were her two favorites. Good bridge player, lover of musical theater, congenial and knowledgeable traveler, outstanding word-puzzle player, discriminating reader of mystery stories, adoring and adored grandmother. In addition to her husband, her survivors are: son Kenneth Swanson, his multitalented wife (Lorraine) and three granddaughters, Amanda, Olivia, and Nicole, all living in Grafton, Massachusetts, with granddaughters through college in their mid-twenties and employed. Marion, having parasailed in her eighties, had skydiving on her Bucket List, an activity enjoyed by her granddaughters. A Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 17, from 4 to 6 pm at Indiana Funeral Care and Crematory, Harry W. Moore Chapel, 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, with a Memorial Service held at 6 pm. Respecting Marion’s wishes, she has been cremated with private burial services at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Vincent Hospice, the Marquette Foundation, or charity of your choice.
